Senior Parents Night / College Application Process-9/21/23

September 17,  2023

Good evening,

I hope this week's Principal’s Message finds you well and that you have had an enjoyable weekend.  Weather wise what a mix, elements of Hurricane Lee to seasonal on coming Fall; Have to love New England!

First quarter is settling in with academics in full swing with active work and ongoing expectations.  Students should check in with their teachers for any needed assistance or questions and request FLEX time as needed.  Students will be able to select their academic teacher’s for FLEX starting the week of 9/25.  Erichments will be added the week of 10/9.

Fall sport teams are off to a good start and the Drama Club is in early stages preparing for their Fall Production.  Extracurricular Clubs are active in early settings planning for the year and preparing for this week's Club Fair; FLEX 9/21.  The Club Fair will provide students in Grades 9 & 10 an opportunity to see the array of clubs SHS has and to allow for student sign up.

I draw your attention to two important items.  Below you will see a notice from the Spartan Enrichment Organization seeking parent involvement for leadership positions.  This vital organization serves as a High School level PTO and helps support teachers with educational needs that benefit students in their learning process.  Your help and involvement is needed and greatly appreciated!

The second item is driving on school grounds.  For the most part our drivers, both student and parent / caregiver, have followed and adhered to our posted and requested driving routes; Thank you!  However, more than a few concerns have been shared regarding drivers cutting through / across parking spaces to get ahead of the line.  This needs to stop immediately.  In a parking lot this active, with driving, parking and walking students and teachers, this behavior not only causes congestion and back up for traffic, but is primarily a safety issue.  Please follow the posted driving route and do not cut across designated parking spaces.

Ending on a positive note for the parking lot, work will begin this week to install new lighting which should be in operation by the end of the week.

Thank you for your patience and support.

Here’s to a good week ahead…Go Spartans!

Best,

Mr. Lombardi

The school counseling office is hosting a Senior Parent Night to share important information regarding steps seniors may need to take with regards to the college application process.  The meeting will be held on Thursday, 9/21 at 6:00 PM in the library.  We are also meeting with seniors during school on 9/18 and 9/19 during their FLEX blocks.  This parent meeting will help to get everyone on the same page with regards to future planning.

Dear Stoneham High School Parents & Caregivers:

We hope your high school student is settling into a routine and enjoying their school activities! Spartan Enrichment Organization (SEO) supports programs, activities and enrichment opportunities that enhance the academic and social environment of Stoneham High School. SEO uses donations and grants to support educators and students in our school community.

The Spartan Enrichment Organization, Stoneham High School’s PTO, is seeking parent / caregiver involvement.  SEO plays an integral role in the support of our students, teachers, and educational process by providing a variety of monetary support and scholarships.  The organization has recently “graduated” its President as her student has graduated from SHS.  The SEO has openings for President and Vice President.   If you are interested in any of these important roles to positively impact SHS and our students please contact: Annette Iebba, SEO Treasurer at:  aiebba@suffolk.edu or Carmen Buonopane, SEO Secretary at: Carmen.Buonopane@mass.gov

We are hopeful that parents and caregivers will join our meetings and consider taking on a leadership position with SEO.  If new leadership is not secured during this school year. SEO will dissolve at the end of this school year as the current SEO leadership will no longer have students at Stoneham High School.

In the 2022/2023 school year, with your generous support SEO:

Prepared holiday and year-end goody bags with coffee shop gift cards for teachers and staff as a token of appreciation.

Established the SEO Mini-Grant program to support and enhance student classroom activities and awarded 7 grants to teachers.

Awarded the Spartan Enrichment Organization $500 scholarship to a SHS senior.

Held six SEO meetings including SHS updates from Principal Lombardi.

Last school year, the SEO established a Mini Grant Program for teachers to apply for up to $300 to support and enhance classroom activities, and awarded 7 mini-grants to SHS teachers including:

        Stoneham Stand bracelets

        Mentor program

        SHS Knitting & Crocheting club

        Agenda books

        Flex activity event

World Language and Culture Club - Culinary events

For the 2023/2024 school year, our major method of fundraising will be the SEO FUND. It is our hope that a generous response from our families will allow us to eliminate the need for numerous smaller fundraising activities. We ask that each family consider a voluntary contribution of $25.00. We realize this isn’t possible for everyone, and we would welcome any amount. You can contribute, using Venmo @SpartanEnrichmentOrg or by check. Please make checks payable to the Spartan Enrichment Organization and have your student drop off your voluntary donation in the SHS main office.

Many thanks,

SEO, Board of Directors: Annette Iebba, Treasurer; Carmelina Buonopane, Secretary

Class of 2024:  New Graduation Date

The date for the Class of 2024 Graduation Commencement has been moved back from Friday, June 7 to Friday, May 31.

This change in date reflects a review of the School Calendar and the realization that the late Graduation date of June 7 resulted in end of school year, 6/12, conflicts with a variety of Grade 9 - 11 educational activities from Biology MCAS and Final Exams to Award Nights and 8th Grade Step Up Day.  The current calendar also had Seniors in school more school days than required.  The new dates remove any conflicts and have an end of school date with required school days as previous graduating classes.

New Senior Dates:

Seniors last day of classes:  Monday, 5/20

Senior Final Exams:  Tuesday, 5/21 - Friday, 5/24

        Senior Prom: Tuesday, 5/28

        Senior Family Picnic: Thursday, 5/30

        Graduation: Friday, 5/31

Academic Awards and Scholarships: TBD

Stoneham Public Schools Yearly Chromebook User Agreement and Protection Plan Information

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We hope this email finds you well. As we prepare for the upcoming school year, we want to ensure that all students have access to the necessary tools for a successful learning experience. In light of this, we are excited to provide Chromebooks to our students to facilitate their education both in the classroom and at home.

To ensure the responsible and effective use of these devices, we have developed a Chromebook User Agreement and optional Protection Plan.

This agreement outlines the guidelines for using the Chromebooks and the steps we are taking to protect these devices.

We kindly ask that you review and complete this agreement and discuss its contents with your student:

        **Chromebook User Agreement Highlights**

Responsible and ethical use of the device for educational purposes.

Handling and care guidelines to maintain the functionality and appearance of the Chromebook.

Adherence to the school's responsible use policy and digital citizenship guidelines.

Awareness of online safety, cybersecurity, and protecting personal information.

        **Protection Plan Benefits**

We understand that accidents can happen, and that's why we are offering an optional Protection Plan for the Chromebooks.

If the yearly Chromebook protection plan is purchased, the student is covered for damages to their Chromebook and charger.

        **Next Steps**

Review and complete the required 23-24 SPS Chromebook Agreement. The form can be accessed HERE

Discuss the agreement with your student to ensure a clear understanding of the responsibilities and expectations.

Consider enrolling in the optional Protection Plan to safeguard your student's device throughout the school year.

Enrolling in the Protection Plan is easy.

Simply visit UniPay and follow the instructions to sign up.

The plan costs $20 per year per student and provides valuable peace of mind.

Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to a successful and productive school year together.

SHS Driving and Student Parking Update

Here is a MAP of our Parking Lot and Traffic Routes as well as the posted signs you will see.  Key points of the Map and parking and traffic plan.

Drop off and Pick up traffic travels the perimeter of the middle parking spaces to the designated lower lot Drop Off / Pick Up Areas.

Three walkways  connect the Drop Off / Pick Up Area to the High School

No Drop Off / Pick Up is permitted in the Upper Lot unless due to physical need

Middle traffic aisle is for middle row parking only

Drop Off / Pick Up Traffic should not drive up the  middle parking aisle

In addition to these  posted travel routes and signage, the  primary message for all student drivers and parent / caregiver drivers is to be aware, cautious and patient when driving on school grounds and to follow the posted signs for travel, parking  and student pick / up drop off.  Travel speed should be no more than 10 miles per hour.

If you find yourself cutting across the parking lot, driving over 1o MPH or not following the posted routes then YOU, are “THAT PERSON,” who is being selfish and inconsiderate to the safety of others.  Safety, whether school based or in the parking lot, requires all of us;  how we drive on campus, in a tight and congested space, is part of establishing a safe environment.  Please do your part!  We thank you for your support and attention to this matter.

We have distributed all parking passes for those students who completed the 1st round of Parking Application process.  We will open the 2nd round for Parking Applications starting Tuesday, September, 5.
